VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Study on the visual representation of climate change includes two objectives. The first aim is finding on the visual representation of climate change from international environmental organization in Thailand. The last aim is comparing on photograph using for environmental communication on climate change of international environmental organizations that have different backgrounds. This research was studied with a postmodernism by the genealogy that using three theories consist of representation, semiotics and visual language theory for a framework of this study. The data source of this study is the National Geographic Thailand Magazine (the 1st to 200th volume during August, 2001 to March, 2018) and Greenpeace Thailand website (1,565 article on climate change during February 7, 2000 to June 1, 2018). The documentary articles with climate change content and the documentary images using according to the criteria setting of researcher that were found 25 articles from the Thai National Geographic Magazine, and 92 articles from Greenpeace website in Thailand. The theme of the visual representation of climate change was classified into 3 main themes such as 1) photographs of coal-fired power plants are presented to represent the causes of climate change, 2) polar bear photographs are used as icons for the effects of climate change and 3) photographs of wind turbines and solar power panels as a solution of climate change. The most photographs are captured in temperate and polar zone. The presentation of the impact is not consistent with the assessment of areas that are highly affected. Comparing of photograph using for environmental communication on climate change of National Geographic Magazine and Greenpeace showed a discontinuous article on climate change, many documentary photographs on articles, and using various shooting techniques, perspectives, lenses, light and color. While Greenpeace the strategy tend changing that visual communication were changed from symbolic expression activities photograph using to more documentary photographs.
