Podcast for Fake News Infodemic Awareness Related to Baby Boomer Health

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the baby boomers’ awareness about the infodemic of health misinformation on social media and to create podcasts on awareness of the spread of health-related news online. A qualitative approach was applied in the study by conducting in-depth interviews with 12 key informants. They were baby boomers aged 56-74 years, who were frequently exposed to social media news. The researcher then conducted in-depth interviews with 9 college academics who had teaching experience in communications for over 5 years. Our informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique to create guidelines for raising awareness about health information on social media. Then the research results were used to produce podcasts that provide knowledge on awareness of health news.


The results found that most baby boomers were frequently exposed to social media and the most widely used social media platforms were Line, Facebook, and YouTube. The reasons were as follows: the diversity of content; easy-to-access; and a chance to select the content that suit their interest, especially health-related content. Then they would apply the information obtained from social media in their daily life. Regarding the awareness of the infodemic of health-related fake news on social media, the results found that the baby boomers had skills in social media use and analysis of health-related news in social media. Most of them did not believe those news and information immediately and searched for information from other sources to support them. They also expressed their opinions by clicking the “like” and sharing the information with their friends or acquaintances. But they would make sure that the information was true before sharing. However, it was found that many baby boomers did not read the entire content before sharing, but read only the titles or headlines. 


About creating health content or even sharing fake health news, they would share them with confidence in their knowledge of the issues and intention to share valuable information with their close friends or family. However, they would not share it with unknown people or report it to social media platforms.


Regarding the use of podcasts, it was found that most baby boomers listened to podcasts on YouTube, but they didn’t know that it was called podcasts. With regard to podcast production, it was found that the episode titles, episode length, and graphics played a key role in capturing their attention. The ideal length of a podcast episode was between 5-20 minutes only. The final part of an episode can be split as the next episode preview. The podcast format that could attract baby boomers was the conversational format between two or more speakers. The researcher then used the results to create podcasts and asked the baby boomers to listen to them. It was found that the podcast contents should be edited to reduce the repeated words, adjust the voice of the podcaster to sound more natural, and reduce the volume of background music. Regarding graphics, the text size should be increased. The researcher applied their suggestions in improving the podcasts and distributed them on YouTube which is the main channel that the baby boomers use to listen to podcasts
