Perspectives of Applying Lean Thinking to Increase Efficiency in Private Warehouse of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses in Chonburi province

Abstract

This qualitative research intended to study problems and ways to improve operational efficiency with lean thinking in SMEs private warehouses in Chonburi province. The researcher used a phenomenological study with 17 key informants of SMEs located in Chonburi Province through a purposive sampling method combined snowball sampling method and the criterion sampling method. Data were collected by semi-structured in-depth interviews, note-taking, and non-participant observation. The data were analyzed using the thematic analysis technique based on Braun and Clarke (2006).


The findings reveal that problems of inefficient private warehouse management of small and medium-sized businesses in Chonburi province consists of 5 problems: 1) problems caused by employees, 2) problems caused by product receiving activities, 3) problems caused by product storage activities, 4) problems caused by product picking activities, and 5) problems caused by shipping activities including guidelines for solving problems as follows:
1) Planning the development of an efficient warehouse employee selection system, increasing training and tracking performance. There is also a mentoring system for coaching employees, as well as increasing effective communication skills in the warehouses. 2) All warehouse employees need to have basic knowledge of Lean concepts. 3) Entrepreneurs should use technology to help store data and increase the efficiency of warehouse management.


However, the results of this research could be used as the basic guidelines and applications for SMEs private warehouse owners to apply for increasing their operational efficiency of SMEs private warehouses as well.
