Abstract

This study's primary objectives are to synthesize the key ethical issues of artificial intelligence (AI) in research within higher education institutions, analyze ethical frameworks and governance guidelines for the use of AI in academic research, and propose recommendations for the development of AI ethics in this context. A systematic literature review was conducted, drawing from credible academic databases for the period 2016-2024, and the findings were synthesized descriptively.

The results indicate that the ethical application of AI in higher education research faces significant challenges concerning transparency, bias, and accountability. Concurrently, there is a distinct lack of clear and specific ethical frameworks and practical guidelines for research governance. Consequently, it is imperative for higher education institutions to proactively develop ethical policies and establish dedicated AI ethics committees. Key recommendations include the development of comprehensive ethical frameworks and practical guidelines for AI in research, the establishment of institutional-level AI ethics committees, the creation of curricula and training programs on AI ethics, the support for further research into the ethics of AI application, and the promotion of inter-institutional collaboration to jointly develop effective practices. Such measures are essential to ensure that the integration of AI in research is of high quality, transparent, reliable, and capable of generating sustainable benefits for society as a whole
