Critical Errors in Translating English to Thai Among Thai Students

Abstract
The objectives of study are to figure out critical errors occurred during English to Thai translation and to study the frequency of each error type. The participants of study are 32 third-year students majoring in English for Service Sectors at Songkhla Rajabahat University. The research instrument used in the study is the translation test that consisted of 15 English sentences. The findings revealed that there were three types of critical errors made by students including sentence structures, vocabulary and idioms, and the lack of background knowledge which the errors of vocabulary and idioms were most frequently occurred. Moreover, translating word with several meanings is mainly occurred in this part followed by idiom and phrasal verbs respectively. These findings can lead to the change of teaching method in translating class that should mainly transmit the equivalent meaning rather than maintain the structure of source language.
