The Changes in Meaning of Chinese Loanwords in Thai Food and Beverage Unit with Modern Chinese

Abstract
This research aimed 1) to study the meaning of Chinese loanwords in food and beverage unit in Thai; and 2) to compare the similar and different meanings with loanwords in food and beverage unit in Chinese loanwords in Thai. It was conducted by exploring and compiling totally 375 Chinese loanwords in Thai from the book title Chinese-Thai loanwords, by selecting 100 loanwords in food and beverage unit. The results have found the meaning of the loanwords in Mandarin from the Chinese-Chinese, and Chinese-Thai dictionary. In terms of Thai meaning, it was from the Thai-Thai dictionary to compare the similar and different meanings. The research instruments were the changing loanword theories in 4 main categories. The analysis showed the words remained the similar 53 meanings, accounting for 53%, broadly semantic widening meaning out of 14 words, representing 14%, semantic narrowing meaning with 23 words, accounting for 23%, and semantic shift of 10 words, accounting for 10%.
