The Application of the Image of the City Theory in Urban Landscape Development

Abstract

This academic article aimed to propose guidelines on landscape development applying from the image of the city theory. It was suggested the urban imagery brought out the elements of perception of the city from city or community visitor. The article consisted of 5 elements, one of them points to the creation of conceptual perception of the urban from those who noticed it. In case of the city environment had the proper composition, it would lead to a clear urban image. As a result, the city would be impressed to visitors or viewers. The study showed the image of the city theory was used to analyze spatially to create a landscape for the community in the study area. In addition, “Path” issue should be developed more routes in order to solve problems of connecting the path between the community and the temple improving the road surface to make it possible to travel easily. For another topic “District”, it should create clarity on the different neighborhoods in the area for instance the clarity on the preservation area of ​​the Lana-style buildings as well as landscape creation in an agricultural district expressing the way of life in traditional community. The results of the study on “Edges” suggested creating a landscape using local plants as natural fences. It would help more imaginary identity of the city in terms of community boundaries. The study of “Landmark” indicated local landmark should be created such as the community entrance. Landmark in the agricultural area would create the image of area more impressive for people. Lastly, “Node” proposed to build a community center to be a handicraft center for selling local products.  If the 5 elements of imaginary city occurred completely in the community, it would make the cultural landscape of the community more beautiful, with the image of the city theory.  It could also create the awareness among visitors or viewers for tourism benefit in Chae Haeng community.
