Main Article Content
Abstract
This qualitative research investigated the role of sacred music in enhancing theological virtues among Christians through liturgical participation. The study pursued two primary objectives: firstly, to examine the theological virtues that Christians cultivate through participation in sacred music during the Eucharistic celebration at the Sacred Heart Cathedral of Chiang Mai Diocese; and secondly, to explore approaches for implementing sacred music in the Eucharistic celebration to foster theological virtues among the faithful at the same cathedral.
The research methodology employed purposive sampling to select two distinct groups of informants. The first group comprised 18 regular congregants who maintained consistent attendance on Sunday Eucharistic celebrations, participating at least three times monthly. The second group consisted of 7 experts, selected based on their professional qualifications and liturgical expertise. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, with distinct protocols designed for each group of participants. The data collected underwent systematic analysis through content analysis methods, frequency distribution, and hierarchical ranking procedures.
The findings revealed that:

2. Guidelines for Utilizing Sacred Music in the Eucharistic Celebration to Enhance Theological Virtues to Christians.
Guidelines for the use of sacred music in the Eucharistic celebration should be oriented toward fostering the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, which constitute the foundation of Christian life. The implementation of these guidelines should be clear and practicable, ensuring that sacred music serves as a true instrument of prayer.
Guidelines for Fostering the Theological Virtue of Charity: Hymns should be selected based on Scripture and the teachings of the Church, emphasizing themes such as the Word of God, redemption, and the Passion of Christ. This selection enhances awareness of the significance of the Eucharist and Christ’s sacrifice. The use of Psalms, which have been long integrated into liturgical traditions, should be encouraged. Additionally, catechesis on the meaning of hymns, especially for young people, should be promoted to ensure that singing becomes an act of prayer and an authentic proclamation of faith rather than mere recitation.
Guidelines for Fostering the Theological Virtue of Hope: Hymns should inspire confidence in divine mercy, focusing on themes such as forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life. Special attention should be given to music used during Lent and Advent, emphasizing the anticipation of Christ’s coming and the fulfillment of God’s promises. Choir members should be trained to convey the emotional depth of hymns effectively, enabling the faithful to experience the message of hope embedded in the music.
Guidelines for Fostering the Theological Virtue of Charity: Music should serve as a unifying force within the Christian community. Hymns reflecting divine love and fraternal charity, such as Ubi Caritas, should be prioritized. Active participation of all age groups in choral singing should be encouraged to strengthen communal bonds. Choral singing in particular should be promoted as it cultivates unity, self-sacrifice, and collaboration among choir members. Additionally, efforts should be made to document and transmit sacred hymns from the elderly to younger generations, ensuring the continuity of sacred music as a means of living out the teachings of the Church.
