Abstract
A Narrowness of Definition and Classifying of Thai Literature toward Minority Languages Literature
This study aimed to analyze problems and causes of narrowness of definition and classification of Thai literature toward minority language literatures in Thailand as well as sought possibility to expand its definition and classification in order to represent multi-culture, multi-ethnic society of Thailand. The study found that 1) the problem occurred within Thai language literatures classified by “well-composing” as an abstract and subjectivity of the works. The well-composing literature works were called “Wannakadee” and the common literature works “Wannakam”. 2) Never been considered for the classification, the minority language works have been regularly communicated among Thai society for ages. 3) Former racism policy of Thai government promoting Thainess based on Thai race, royal culture, as well as Thai language was the main cause not only pushing minority language literatures out of the definition and classification, but affecting their literacy creation. However, ethnics using co-languages with of minorities, especially Chinese, rapidly growing up in Thailand, have brought a tendency to compile the minorities’ literatures as part of Thai literatures called “Thai literature in Chinese” or Thai literature in other languages.
