Abstract

The elder living behavior is a significant and interesting phenomenon in preparation for
entering an aging society in Thailand. This research, therefore, uses quantitative method to classify
the elderly and study the housing behavior of each elderly group in Thailand. The sample of this
study was selected from the elderly living in the metropolitan or Bangkok and suburban areas as
a case study. The researcher divided this study into two phases 1) studying the secondary data and
2) collecting the primary data through a questionnaire survey using Google Form and a purposive
sampling method to select samples. Results found through the mobility analysis segmented the
elderly into two main groups; the elderly, who do not rely on wheelchairs but rather on walkers,
and the elderly, who rely on wheelchairs. These elderly live in detached houses, shophouses, and
condominiums, with their housing behavior categorized as elderly who can live alone during the
daytime, elderly who can live alone in their houses but have relatives or caretakers within the
neighborhood, and elderly who live with families all the time. Furthermore, the Chi-Square test is
used to describe the relationship between data. It reveals that the housing behavior of pre-elderly
and elderly groups is different regarding house design needs and the characteristics of houses they
inhabit. The data analysis yielded a chi-squared value of 5.069 and a statistical significance level of
0.408. In addition, the behavior of the elderly without mobility limitations group also shares different
needs in house design. The data analysis yielded a chi-squared value of 5.027 and a statistical
significance level of 0.413
