Transferring of local identities through contemporary architecture: Case study in Thailand and Asia

ABSTRACT

This study aims to search for the methods of transferring local identities in contemporary architecture by analysis through case studies which have been selected from articles and publications published in the media in both domestic and international media.  By considering various issues such as local architectural identity, local art identity, local wisdom, the use of local materials and site specific conditions 30 case studies were selected.

The results revealed that 1) each region reflects local identity in architecture through several methods such as weather condition, local resources, or specific culture of locality or region.  2) Local identities in contemporary architecture involve the application of local architectural elements, local art patterns and local wisdom.  3) In some selected case studies there are more than one method of transferring local identity.  4) The type of use of the building affects the method of transferring local identity.  5) The methods of transferring local identity in contemporary buildings that most found is the application of local wisdom.
