Potentials of Collective Objectives between the Architectural Space of Control and Healing

Abstract

This article focuses on the study and potential resolution of the conceptual correlations of spatial organization between the controlling of prisoners and the healing of patients. Through the analysis of the spatial utilization and characteristics of prisons and hospitals from the past. Both the concepts of control and healing are influenced by an overarching objective setting, which is intended to enable detainees or patients to behave toward the purpose of acquiring productivity within the organizations. Consequently, an influential and positive change within these objectives results directly in the current form and space of architecture. This paper includes analyses of dual case studies regarding ‘control’ and ‘Healing’ – prisons and hospitals.

Through analyzing both historical data of architectural spaces and the selected dual case studies, the determined objectives to control behaviors using the discipline bring about the successful impact only in physical aspects. Furthermore, the Lack of empathy can affect the repatriation of inmates or patients back to society, also the overly determined purpose of Healing in treatment can result in risk of lessening the control of organizational aspects within architectural spaces. Therefore, the pursuit of understanding the ideals between controlling and healing purposes in both architectural design concepts may achieve the ultimate balance of healthy bodies and minds for the users who can be released back to society once again.
