Abstract

This research aims to study characters in Thai literature that have been subjected to
parody and mimicry in terms of their visual representation. The study utilizes locally sourced ceramic materials derived from native soil. Data collection involves an analysis of character archetypes
in Thai literature from textbooks, research papers, and relevant studies. Four characters,
namely “Ngaw Pa”, “Kaew Naa Ma”, “Khun Chang,” and “Phi Suea Samut” , were selected for
in-depth analysis.
The research employed a questionnaire to gather information on factors influencing the
design of ceramic art. The data obtained were analyzed to identify character traits, and based on
this analysis, ten design prototypes were created. Communication in these designs incorporated
figurative elements such as shape, facial expressions, proportions, posture, vehicles, and sculpting
techniques. Symbolism and connotations of objects were considered in the aesthetic aspect of the
designs.
The assessment of the designs involved the use of a ranking questionnaire, with criteria
ranging from lying posture to distorted proportions, double-faced characters, and the use of sculpting
techniques. Local soil from Nong Reua was experimented with in 16 different formulations, with
the most successful being the 13th formulation composed of 50% Nong Reua soil, 10% sandy soil,
and 40% white soil. The resulting ceramic exhibited good plasticity and, after firing at 1,200 °C in
an oxidation atmosphere, achieved a reddish-brown color, 12% shrinkage, and 6% water absorption.
The decorative techniques included clay slip inlay, colored clay, and glazing, contributing
to the overall artistic expression. The study concludes that the research and experiments are valuable
in guiding the creation of characters with meaningful and distinctive identities, facilitating the
development of meaningful ceramic art characters.
