According to the concept of Gestalt Psychology, perception depends entirely on
the stimulus pattern. The relationship of shape and pattern depends on the relation of
things. Sensation and perception were processed by external stimuli information receiving.
Occurence feelings were interpreted through individual experiences and learning. The perception of shape arises from the principle of the relationship between the figure and the
background. (Figure-Ground relationship) in the same territory. The picture is the most
clearly shaped things in the territory and the background is all the rest of the territory.
“Burapha Jeerranai” were created from this research, due to the study of the proportions and elements in the gem faceting. The study of the principles of shape perception
through the relationship between figure and ground, degree and angle calculation design
of the facet that results in a picture, using the technique of faceting and carving. According
to the study, it was found that the cutting of a gems occurs from different proportions on
each of the gemstones having different functions, such as integrating light into the gemstone or reflecting light entering the gems back to the top. The facets of the gems can be
linked to the shape perception principle through the relationship between the figure and
ground.
The researcher used the Burapha University logo as the inspiration for the faceted
design. Preliminary Design perception of shape was tested from the interview tool. Data
were collected from key informants (10 persons) using a Purposive Sampling method to the
specified selection criteria. The interview was used as a tool for data collection. The relationship between the image and the background of Edgar Rubin (Gestalt psychologist) is
applied to the interview questionnaire. The results of the study were used to develop a
gems facet pattern according to the relationship between the figure and ground. A faceted
design that is recognized as a symbol of Burapha University.
