Music Notation as an instructional material in Lanna Music

Abstract
This article aims to study the development of musical notation as well as using for instructional materials in Lanna music. The Lanna musical knowledge was originally transmitted by oral tradition method. The historical evidence showed only song text was literate, no musical notation record. Afterward, musical notation is use of instructional media, assigning symbols such as numbers, circles, words for reciting or using Thai alphabet notation. However, the musical notation in Lanna culture were merely a mnemonic for musicians. The knowledge of instrumental technique, music learners are inevitably refined from their cultural experience. The most popular notation for Lanna music learning is the Thai alphabet notation system.
