บทความวิจัยฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์นวนิยายเรื่อง City of Small Blessings ของไซมอน เทย์ นักเขียนชายชาวสิงคโปร์ นวนิยายเรื่องนี้นำเสนอนิยามความเป็นชาติของสิงคโปร์โดยเฉพาะความรู้สึกที่ประชาชนมีต่อสิงคโปร์ในฐานะมาตุภูมิ โดยให้ตัวละครเผชิญสภาวะพลัดถิ่นผ่านการอพยพไปใช้ชีวิตในต่างแดน ตัวละครเดินทางกลับสิงคโปร์เพื่อเชื่อมโยงตนเองเข้ากับความทรงจำในอดีตที่มีในแผ่นดินแม่และใช้การเล่าเรื่องเพื่อประกอบสร้างอัตลักษณ์ของตนให้สมบูรณ์ งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งวิเคราะห์สภาวะพลัดถิ่นและประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนบุคคลที่ปรากฏในเรื่องว่า สภาวะพลัดถิ่นส่งผลต่อการบอกเล่าประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนบุคคลของตัวละครอย่างไร และประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนบุคคลของพลเมืองสิงคโปร์ส่งผลต่อการประกอบสร้างอัตลักษณ์ชาติอย่างไร โดยอาศัยวิธีการอ่านละเอียดและกรอบแนวคิดทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับสภาวะพลัดถิ่น การประกอบสร้างอัตลักษณ์และประวัติศาสตร์ทางเลือกประกอบการวิเคราะห์ ผลการวิเคราะห์ที่ได้คือ สภาวะพลัดถิ่นผลักดันให้ผู้พลัดถิ่นค้นหานิยามของตนเองและของชาติ ความทรงจำของชุมชนคือประวัติศาสตร์ทางเลือกอีกชุดหนึ่งของประวัติศาสตร์ชาติ และประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนบุคคลทำให้อัตลักษณ์ของบุคคลและของชาติสมบูรณ์เอกสารอ้างอิง
