Venerable Mahākaccāyana in Various Documents, Part II : Missions from King Caṇḍapajjota and the Buddha

Abstract
This article continues from part one in the previous issue. This part has two aims: Firstly, it narrates the stories of King Caṇḍapajjota and Venerable Mahākaccāyana concerning the former sending Mahākaccāyana to invite the Lord Buddha until Venerable Mahākaccāyana returned to Ujjenī for Buddhist propagation. These stories have been presented by comparing information in Theravāda and Mūlasarvāstivāda scriptures. Secondly, this article studies the relationship between different documents, including the selection of the more reasonable information from conflicting texts.
The narrative from the scriptures of the two schools consists of corresponding and differing details. The study of parallel scriptures in this article is beneficial to better understand several points in the biographies of Venerable Mahākaccāyana and King Caṇḍapajjota. Some remarks on information in various documents have been demonstrated in the article as follows: (1) The reason King Caṇḍapajjota sent somebody to invite the Lord Buddha was the hope that he could suppress an epidemic; (2) Information in palm leaf manuscripts supports that the number of people who attained enlightenment together with Mahākaccāyana is approximately five hundred; (3) The narrative, from the ordination of Venerable Mahākaccāyana until his return to Ujjenī, probably happened during the 7th-9th years after the Buddha’s enlightenment.
