Abstract

This research article aims to: (1) synthesize media that reflect the law of karma concerning Pānātipātā in accordance with Buddhist teachings, (2) develop media that embody the principles of Pānātipātā as taught in Buddhism, and (3) apply such media to foster behavioral transformation that reflects the law of karma in relation to Pānātipātā. The study employed a qualitative approach integrated with Action Research, encompassing three dimensions: (1) textual study of the Pāli Canon and commentaries, (2) fieldwork involving in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory observation with youth, scholars, and monks, and (3) media design through theatrical methods, employing techniques such as storyboarding, the use of light and shadow, and symbolic representation.
The findings reveal three key results. First, intention (cetanā) is central to the interpretation of karma, where both minor and major actions affect
individuals and society, with ānantarika karmma representing the gravest
violation that undermines the foundation of moral values. Second, the
development of short films—Ngao Karma (“Shadow of Karma”) and Mātughāta (“Matricide”)—demonstrated that abstract principles can be conveyed
concretely through a three-layered narrative structure (principle–narrative–
reflection), engaging audiences both cognitively and affectively. Third, the
application of these media in real contexts—schools, temples, communities, and online platforms—produced tangible emotional, cognitive, and behavioral impacts: learners became more aware, fearful of wrongdoing, respectful of the sanctity of life, and committed to behavioral change.
By integrating Buddhist doctrine, social research methodology, and
communication /theatrical arts, this study synthesized new knowledge in the form of the “PĀNA Model,” derived from Pānātipātā. The model consists of four
sequential components: P = Principle of Dhamma, Ā = Analytical Synthesis,
N = Narrative Media, and A = Awareness & Action. This model provides a systematic framework for the creation of Buddhist-based media rooted in the Pāli Canon, connected with contemporary social issues, and capable of fostering moral learning and concrete behavioral transformation at both individual and societal levels.
