Mindful Awareness and Treatment Adherence in Relation to Health Behavior Self-Regulation among Patients with Non-Communicable Diseases
Main Article Content
Abstract
Chronic noncommunicable diseases are major health problems that require patients to regulate their own behaviors alongside medical
treatment in order to control disease progression and reduce complications. The
objectives of this research are: (1) to examine modern medical treatment approaches and patients’ confidence in treatment as they relate to self-health care among patients with chronic noncommunicable diseases; and (2) to analyze the relationship between mindfulness and wisdom-based thinking according to the principle of Yoniso Manasikāra and the regulation of health care behaviors among this group of patients. This study employed documentary research by synthesizing data from the Tipiṭaka, commentaries, research articles, and related documents. The data were analyzed and organized according to the research objectives.
The findings revealed that modern medical treatment approaches that allow patients to participate in treatment decision-making play an important role in fostering patients’ confidence in and acceptance of treatment. In addition, such approaches contribute to the enhancement of patients’ mental health, as encouraging patients to cooperate in regulating their self-health care behaviors enables them to manage their thoughts, emotions, and inner awareness. This, in turn, leads to appropriate self-care in terms of diet, medication use, rest, and physical exercise. Notably, mindfulness and wisdom-based thinking according to the principle of Yoniso Manasikāra were found to be related to the regulation of patients’ health care behaviors. Specifically, mindfulness serves as a fundamental
mechanism for being aware of the body, mind, and emotions, thereby
helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Meanwhile, wisdom-based thinking, as a process of rational reflection, influences patients’ ability to regulate their own health care behaviors. Therefore, promoting the application of mindfulness and wisdom-based thinking in conjunction with modern medical treatment is essential. This requires the integration of medical, psychological, and Buddhist knowledge, as these components support patients’ participation in treatment and enable them to regulate their health care behaviors appropriately. The findings of this study are beneficial not only to health care service units, public health personnel, psychologists, policymakers, patients, and their families, but also serve as a practical guideline for promoting appropriate self-health care among patients with chronic noncommunicable diseases.
