Narrative Analysis for Understanding Adolescent Mental Illness in film, “The Perks of being a wallflower.”

Abstract

This study has 2 objectives which are the analysis of characters' mental illness Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with Depression and the textual analysis. The finding shows that the film portrayal of the mental illness is filled with understanding; it conveys the cause, mental conditions, perplexed thought and behavior throughout the coming of age genre. As a result, the story is well blend of vibrant adolescent vibe, fun, humor and emotion which being good components of narrative theory.

The main character, Charlie, is assigned as a firstperson narrator so that the audience can absorb the story from act one, which introduces Charlie as a shy teenager, to act two,  which reveals his mental complex in the past and continues until it becomes hallucination   in his mind, which is the film's climax, and finally, act three, in which he receives proper       treatment on time with the help and support of his family, friends, and lover, until he         achieves well condition. The theme "awareness of high self-esteem" of a sick character in this film is conformed to the best approach for healing mental illness.
