Transmedia Journalism to Drive The Issue of Poverty and Inequality

Abstract

Transmedia Journalism to drive the issue of poverty and inequality is qualitative research by documentary research method. The objectives of this research were to study the formats, channels, and methods of Transmedia Storytelling in coverage of poverty and inequality issues of the Center for Communication of Social Agenda and Public Policy, Thai Public Broadcasting Service. Henry Jenkins' concept of Transmedia Storytelling was used as a framework for this research.

The results showed that 11 presentation formats were used in Transmedia Storytelling, such as documentaries “Kon Jon Meung”, news, news clips, articles, public forums, etc. Communication on poverty and inequality it has applied the concept of Transmedia Storytelling, which consists of 6 key features and 7 fundamentals. The results of this research had found to created stories from various issues related to poverty, it is a review from the situation about the poor and the policies related to the poor. Three communication channels were used, On Air through Thai PBS television stations, Online via official channel and On Ground activities all being integrated. As a result of the Transmedia Plan, viewers were encouraged to learn and express their opinions on poverty issues such as commenting on the official pages, contact for help and participating in public forum activities. However, a shared experience has not yet been found after watching the documentary series. The building of a sense of unity to drive participation in public policy movements is not evident. The Center for Communication of Social Agenda and Public Policy as reviewed to expand the story and develop the Transmedia Journalism workflow in the next phase.
