Abstract

This study investigates storytelling and the representation of love in music videos by the band Three Man Down, released on YouTube between 2018 and 2022. Analyzing a purposive sample of 11 music videos, the research examines narrative elements including plot, theme, point of view, characterization, and setting. This study employs a qualitative content analysis methodology.
The study found that plots of music videos of the Three Man Down were based on incident orders with reasonable and purposeful manners which were exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and ending. For the incident orders with reasonable and purposeful manners, most of the Three Man Down's music videos had the themes about unfulfilled love, one-sided love, disappointed love, and undeveloped love. Whereas the points of view were found that the majority was the narratives of the first person, meanwhile, plots of music videos had different incident orders with reasonable, purposeful, and non-purposeful manners depending on various music emotions which were mostly based on love matters. For theme, unfulfilled love, disappointed love, undeveloped love, and points of view were mostly based on the narratives and first person's sight with the storytelling through the lens of one character or key character including the settings appearing in the music videos, helping to create better emotions and understanding of storytelling. For interpretation, love was the important thing of interpretation and the differences in love might communicate different feelings they were mostly based on implied communication, for example, the metaphor of communication with something else instead of direct communication. This reflected that the interpretation was not necessary to be direct communication because interpretation was regarded as the science and art of communication including the past or present situation. But it was depended on the presentation of the main points of various songs. This was important to make the audiences to accept and to have better feelings with the songs through the communicating and interpretation of the songs.
