Abstract

Television viewing and its effects on perception of social reality among receivers is one of the most interesting topics that gained attention in the west.  In Thailand, on the contrary, studies on the effects of television viewing on perception of receivers in this aspect are very scarce.  This research is a pilot study aims to investigate the correlation between television viewing and the perception of social reality among female university students in two aspects: 1) beauty leads to success of women’s lives, and 2) men are more capable in holding professions of medicine doctor, business and politics.  Four hundred samples were purposively selected from 4 universities in 4 parts of the country to answer the 5-scale questionnaire.  The findings of the first aspect partially support the hypothesis that is stipulated in the Cultivation theory that television viewing is related to perception of female students.  The findings reveal that beauty can lead women to success.  However, the samples don’t seem to perceive the second aspect as a practice in the real world. Even though the findings of this research are not quite impressive, but they confirm that female students perceive reality that beauty and career are important variables that can lead them to success.  However, they also perceive that if they have a chance to be married to a well-off man, life will be better.  One variable that can’t be discarded from the analysis of the perception of television viewers in a collectivistic society is the habitat of the viewers.  This research finds that the habitat of the television viewers is significantly related to their perception of the two aspects.
