Development and Process of Urbanization: A Case Study of Yangon City, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar from 1990 to 2015.

Abstract

This article was purposed to study developments and processes of Yangon city’s urbanization which was administered under the operations of the Yangon City Development Committee from 1990 to 2015. Study framework was conceptualized by the concepts of Urbanization theory. These theories were employed to analyze and characterize roles of various cities that have been developed under different eras. The studies were conducted by examining available academic and research documents written in Thai, English, and Burmese languages. Results revealed that Yangon city has been developed and transformed from a small fishing village to become a port town, a national capital, and finally Myanmar’s economic hub respectively. These developments have been managed by the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and Union which was governed by successive Myanmar administrations.
