Readiness of Farmers’ for Coffee Production Innovation Adoption in Ban Thap Boek, Lom Kao District, Phetchabun Province

Abstract
This study aimed to 1) examine the socio-economic characteristics of coffee farmers, 2) assess their knowledge of coffee production, 3) investigate their exposure to information and communication regarding coffee production, and (4) evaluate their readiness to adopt coffee production innovations among farmers in Ban Thap Boek Community, Phetchabun Province, Thailand. A mixed-methods research design integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches was employed. The quantitative component included all 136 coffee farmers in Ban Thap Boek Community, while the qualitative component involved 12 key informants. Data were collected using a structured interview questionnaire for the quantitative survey and semi-structured in-depth interviews for the qualitative investigation.
The quantitative findings revealed that the majority of respondents were female (58.82%), with an average age of 49.12 years. Most farmers had no formal education. The average household size was 4.47 members, with an average of 1.64 years of coffee farming experience and an average cultivated area of 1.88 rai. Most respondents cultivated coffee on their own land, employed an average of 1.68 laborers, participated in one farmer group, and relied primarily on a single source of loan financing. Overall, farmers demonstrated a low level of knowledge regarding coffee production. Their readiness to adopt coffee production innovations was generally low, particularly in nursery and planting practices, weed, pest, and disease management, and post-harvest management. However, a moderate level of readiness was observed in certain aspects, including site and climatic suitability, crop maintenance, and harvesting practices. The qualitative findings indicated that Ban Thap Boek possesses considerable potential for producing high-quality coffee. Nevertheless, farmers continue to face significant constraints in knowledge, technology, and innovation throughout the production process, particularly in crop management, pest and disease control, and post-harvest handling. Therefore, efforts should focus on strengthening farmers' capacity through effective knowledge transfer,the provision of appropriate technologies, and the establishment of collaborative networks to enhance their readiness to adopt agricultural innovations and sustainably improve coffee quality.
