Based on international principles? : The study of the Thai government's measures to control public assembly during 2020 - 2022.

Abstract

At present, Thailand's political situation is at an unprecedented level in its history. Public assembly became a common venue for the expression and movement of democratic concerns. As a result, the Thai government has relied on violent measures to subdue public gatherings, citing legal violations by the demonstrators and state actions that were consistent with international standards. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to examine whether the Thai government's assembly control measures are consistent with international standards. To achieve this goal, an analysis of the facts from a variety of sources, including academics, the media, and civil society organizations, will be conducted in addition to a review of the international standards that establish guidelines for supervision of public assemblies.

According to the result of this study, the Thai government continues to abuse its authority excessively and disproportionately when it involves policing or supervising public gatherings. In particular, there were instances of force being exercised in ways inconsistent with the nature of the rallies. Additionally, they have consistently neglected to implement compensation and take accountability for the victims of police misconduct at public gatherings.
