A Study on the Location of Thalang City and Battlefields 1785 and 1809 Using New Foreign Evidence

Since the reign of King Rama V, the history of Thalang and the Battles of Thalang that took place in 1786 and 1809, was derived from secondary evidence such as: 1) The Thalang Chronicles and the book ‘Thao Thep Krasattri Thao Sri Sunthon: Report of the 2nd Thalang Historical Seminar, 1996”, which placed Thalang City and the battlefields of 1785 at Ban Ta Khian, Thalang District; and 2) The Rattanakosin Chronicles, in which King Rama II stated that Thalang city in 1809 is the old town near the north coast of the island, while the 1809 battlefield was placed at Ban Don
However, from new foreign primary evidence, it can be stated that: 1) Thalang City in 1785 was Tharua City, which agrees with the accounts of British eyewitnesses that reported the attack of the Burmese army on Tharua City and Tharua Bay. Therefore, the battlefield of Thalang in 1785 was at Tharua City and Tharua Bay; and 2) French missionary eyewitnesses who was present in this conflict and was taken as a prisoner of the Burmese also indicate that Thalang City and the 1809 battlefield were at Tharua City.
