Products’ Quality Standard Development for Papyrus Mat, Baan Wiang Pang Kham, Wiang Nua Subdistrict, Wiang Chai District, Chiang Rai

Abstract

This research aims to study the context of papyrus mat waving of Baan Wiangpangkham, Wiang Nua Sub District, Wiang Chai District, Chiang Rai and develop the quality of papyrus mat based on Thai Industrial Standards Institute. The research samples were 8 members and 20 experts of papyrus mat waving group who selected by purposive sampling technique. Interview and the experiment records of papyrus dyeing were employed as research instrument. The result showed that the context of papyrus mat waving of Baan Wiangpangkham had effect from cultural influences and local wisdom from northeast due to the immigrants in Udon Thani and Kalasin while the famous papyrus type was Kok Lang Ka. The preparing process were slitting papyrus stalk 4-6 pieces, drying, coloring, and preparing for waving. The texture included Barupuem, Crossing Sign, Double Bars, Markhos, Salong, Mark Jab, Khid, Nam Lai, and Thor Pah. According to Thai Industrial Standards Institute, the researcher developed the quality in 4 phases. The first phase was developing dyeing papyrus; the result showed that the effect that influenced dyeing quality included slitting, measurement, mixture, dyeing duration, using alum, and label development. The papyrus quality assessment in second phase showed that general features, producing, textiles, colors, margin sewing, and using passed the evaluations. The demonstration in third phase found that the satisfactions were in highest level including applying knowledge ( =4.52), transferring content ( =4.44), content need and place, time, and meals ( =4.24). The fourth phase, the quality evaluation were in highest level including benchmark and label ( =4.61), papyrus features ( =4.56), production ( =4.47), and textiles ( =4.25).
