Influence of Lokappadīpakasāra on the Pāli Buddhism in Later Period Based on Quotations of the Lokappadīpakasāra in the Cakkavāḷadīpanī and Lokasaṇṭhānajotaratanagaṇṭhī

Abstract

The present paper is the study of the influence of the Lokappadīpakasāra (14^th century) on the Cakkavāḷadīpanī (1520) and the Lokasaṇṭhānajotaratanagaṇṭhī (1520-1747), two Pāli texts of a later period which mention cosmology.
In both texts, the fact that the largest number of the quotations are from the Lokappadīpakasāra gives us evidence that the Lokappadīpakasāra had a great influence on them. That is also confirmed by the intention of the author of the Cakkavāḷadīpanī to have used quotations from the Lokappadīpakasāra in spite of knowing the existance of 16 quotations from other texts. Among the quotations in both texts from the Lokappadīpakasāra, the largest number of those is from the seventh chapter “The explanation of the cosmos” (Okāsalokaniddesa). It is also obvious that the structure of the Cakkavāḷadīpanī follows the model of
the seventh chapter in the Lokappadīpakasāra. This shows us that the importance of the Lokappadīpakasāra, especially its seventh chapter.
