The Chinese Jātaka’s Stanzas that Correspond with the Jātakapāli : A Critical Comparative Study Their Correspondence with Stanzas in the Jātakapāli

Abstract
This article aims to explore, translate and study the Jātaka’s stanzas that have been inherited in both the Pāli Tipitaka and the Chinese Hīnayāna texts. This study has focused on corresponding stanzas that are used in the same or resemblant Jātaka stories.
A parallel collection of 37 stanzas of the Jātakapāli matched with 58 stanzas in the “Jātaka stories” of the Chinese texts have been examined for concordance. The Chinese stanzas occur in the Vinayas of (Mūla)sarvāstivāda, Mahāsaṃghika, Mahiśāsaka, Dharmagupta; and the Sūtras, viz.: Dīrghāgama (Chang ahan), Madhyamāgama (Zhong ahan), Saṃyuktāgama (Za ahan), Ekottarāgama (Zengyi ahan), Dharmapadāvadāna (Fajupiyujing), Udānavarga (Chuyaojing), Jātaka (Shengjing), Buddha-
caritasaṃgraha (Fobenxingjijing). These stanzas can be considered to have already appeared in the early Buddhist schools (Hīnayāna) period at the latest and to have been widely recognized by at least two schools in company of them.
Throughout a study of the stanzas, the following can be approved: (1) Two Pāli stanzas contribute to comprehension of two Chinese transliterated words; (2) Two stanzas of the Chinese translation are beneficial to the textual criticism of two stanzas in the Jātakapāli, which have been provided in various versions; (3) Some words in Sanskrit stanzas that correspond with Chinese stanzas are different from Pāli words, but both senses of meaning are similar or closely related; and (4) Some Sanskrit stanzas that correspond with Chinese stanzas have the same meaning as Pāli stanzas but some words in the Chinese stanzas might be based on liberal translation (not literal translation) or have been translated from original stanzas that are slightly
different from the existing Sanskrit versions.
