Venerable Mahākaccāyana in Various Documents, Part III: His Early Sermons and Contributions to the Content of Buddhist Scriptures

Abstract
This article builds upon the preceding section, with three primary objectives in focus: (1) narrating the sermons delivered by Venerable Mahākaccāyana in the early stages of his propagation, (2) compiling Mahākaccāyana’s roles in relation to the Canon’s content, and (3) examining the origins of the scriptures that attribute their authorship to Mahākaccāyana. The study draws from sources in Theravāda and other traditions, as well as scholarly research.
The study reveals the following: (1) According to (Mūla)Sarvāstivāda scriptures, during Mahākaccāyana’s return to the city of Ujjenī in the early period, he expounded teachings, sharing insights with King Caṇḍapajjota on the concepts of non-attachment to food and the cultivation of mindfulness. These teachings align with the doctrine found in the Theravāda Canon. (2) Mahākaccāyana played a significant role in shaping the content of the Tipiṭaka. In the Vinaya Piṭaka of Theravāda and certain other sects, there is a narrative where he entrusted the monk Soṇakuṭikaṇṇa with the task of requesting amendments to the five principles from the Buddha. In the Pāli Suttanta Piṭaka, there are at least 12 suttas that correspond with content in the Chinese Āgama, featuring passages that showcase his preaching or explanation of Dhamma. Additionally, documents of Chinese tradition state that Mahākaccāyana played a role in categorizing the contents of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka. (3) Current scriptures specifying Mahākaccāyana’s compilation include the Netti, Peṭakopadesa, and Kaccāyana’s grammar. The Netti and Peṭakopadesa may exhibit differences in details or format from the original versions composed by Mahākaccāyana during the Buddhist era. The Peṭakopadesa, in particular, is widely disseminated across various sects. The content of Kaccāyana’s grammar, although largely unrelated to Mahākaccāyana, may be linked to the first grammatical rule or be authored by schools tracing their lineage back to him.
