The Role of the United States in Advancing Women's Rights through Female-Led Walt Disney Animation Films

This study examines the representation of female characters in Walt Disney Animation movies and investigates the link between the United States (US) and its advocacy for women's rights. This research used qualitative research methods by documentary analysis of women's rights through Disney animated films with the literature review and the textual analysis from the media of Disney animated films. Five theories including Feminism, Soft Power, Cultural Imperialism, Narrative Theory, and Genres Theory, were employed to analyze five selected Disney films: Frozen, Zootopia, Moana, Incredible 2, and Raya and the Last Dragon. The researcher is interested in the presentation of female characters in cartoons with stories present for viewing. A study by Walt Disney remodels their content to be more feminist. It also analyzed US women's rights policies when the film was released concurrently. The findings indicate that these films depict female characters in a manner that aligns with feminist ideologies, highlighting the expansion of their abilities and empowerment. Furthermore, it was discovered that these films serve as Soft Power tools for the United States to advance the rights and empowerment of women and girls through foreign policy in conjunction with Disney's media. This, in turn, raises awareness and support for women's rights within world society, and supports the expansion of human rights ideology according to US foreign policy.
