The Role and Meaning of Beliefs about Phra Ruang’s Curse Appears in the Community of Sukhothai Province : A Case Study of Ban Pak-Naum, Sawankhaloke, Sukhothai

บทคัดย่อ

This research aims to study roles and meanings of the beliefs in Phra Ruang’s Curse in Pak Naum community and to analyze the reasons and dynamics of beliefs about Phra Ruang’s curses as depicted in Pak Naum community with the implication of their impacts on the political view of the people. This is a qualitative research, employing methodologies that include surveys, participative observation, interviews, community’s hearings as well as the analysis of local history records from Sukhothai and others provinces. The study finds that the beliefs about Phra ruang’s curse have considerable roles and meanings to people in the Pak Naum community, both at the community and individual levels. The story of a legendary “Phra ruang” has passed down from generation to generation since a long period of time. The belief is a systematic cultural practice that defines relationships and way of life in the community. It is also a referent point for social rules and community conflict resolutions. The public perception that the people were cursed by Phra ruang “not a success in unity” provides a referent for intervention by rules and superior authorities in managing community relationships and resolving community conflicts. Such belief system thus affects the political perspective, leading to the practice of an unconditional respect for leaders. Despite the change in the outside world with the rapid advance of technology of communication, the beliefs about Phra Ruang’s curse will remain strong as it has adapted well to suit the benefits of community.

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทและความหมายของคติความเชื่อเรื่องคำสาปพระร่วงที่ปรากฏในชุมชนชาวปากน้ำ จังหวัดสุโขทัย และเพื่อศึกษาและวิเคราะห์สาเหตุของการดำรงอยู่และการเปลี่ยนแปลงของคติความเชื่อเรื่องคำสาปพระร่วงที่ปรากฏในชุมชนปัจจุบันเพื่อใช้วิเคราะห์แนวโน้มของบริบททางสังคมและผลกระทบต่อโลกทัศน์ทางการเมือง การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยใช้ทั้งการสำรวจ การสังเกตการณ์อย่างมีส่วนร่วม การสัมภาษณ์ กระบวนการประชาคม และจากการศึกษาบันทึกประวัติศาสตร์ท้องถิ่นต่าง ๆ ซึ่งจากการศึกษาพบว่า คติความเชื่อเรื่องคำสาปพระร่วงมีบทบาทและความหมายต่อชาวบ้าน ทั้งในระดับชุมชนและระดับบุคคล ผ่านเรื่องเล่าตำนานพระร่วงที่มีการบอกเล่าสืบทอดต่อกันมาจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นมาอย่างยาวนาน โดยการรับรู้ของคนในชุมชนว่า “ชาวบ้านปากน้ำถูกพระร่วงสาปให้ไม่สามารถทำอะไรร่วมกันได้สำเร็จ”  กล่าวคือคติความเชื่อเรื่องคำสาปพระร่วงได้กลายเป็นทั้งวัฒนธรรมความเชื่อและระบบความสัมพันธ์ของคนในชุมชนสู่ความเป็นวิถีชีวิตชุมชน และยังเป็นทางออกของความขัดแย้งและสร้างกฎเกณฑ์ทางสังคม  นับว่าเป็นการสร้างความประนีประนอมให้คนในสังคมชุมชนยอมรับเงื่อนไข กฎเกณฑ์ของสังคม ที่ถูกกำหนดและสร้างขึ้นโดยผู้มีอำนาจและสิ่งที่มีอำนาจเหนือกว่า เพื่อเป็นการจัดการระบบความสัมพันธ์ของคนกับคน ในการแก้ไขปัญหาความขัดแย้งของคนในชุมชน ภายใต้การยอมรับว่า ความขัดแย้งของคนในชุมชนนั้นเป็นลักษณะธรรมชาติของสังคมชุมชนเช่นกัน ดังนั้นความเชื่อเรื่องคำสาปพระร่วงจึงส่งผลต่อโลกทัศน์ทางการเมืองให้มีการยอมรับนับถือผู้นำภายใต้คติความเชื่อดังกล่าวโดยไม่มีเงื่อนไข  แม้ว่ากระแสการเปลี่ยนแปลงในโลกยุคปัจจุบันจะรุนแรงและรวดเร็ว แต่คติความเชื่อในเรื่องคำสาปพระร่วงก็ยังคงอยู่คู่กับชุมชนต่อไป เพราะคติความเชื่อเองก็มีการปรับตัวเพื่อรับใช้สังคมชุมชน หากไม่สามารถตอบสนองความต้องการหรือแก้ไขปัญหาของผู้คนในชุมชนที่มีความหลากหลาย คติความเชื่อนั้นก็ไม่มีประโยชน์อันใดที่จะอยู่ในสังคมชุมชนนั้นต่อไป
