Dish set design project build with colored clay patterns Inspired by Hoop Taem

Abstract
This research aimed to study the of porcelain creation using colored clay overlapping technique, and to study the compositions of Chaisri Temple’s Hoop Taem Isan folk art for applying in plate pattern design, and designing dish sets using colored clay overlapping technique. From the study, the decoration of porcelain by colored clay overlapping technique is a technique that combines molding and decorating processes while the soil is still soft by mixing colors into the soil and forming the workpiece vertically. One forming can produce a large number of work pieces depending on the thickness of the soil defined. The pattern will appear both on the outside and on the inside which is a very interesting technique. However, there are still quite a few people studying this technique in Thailand due to the time consuming caused by many steps employed in both the raw material preparation and the forming processes. In foreign countries, there has been an invention of a manual clay extruder that makes molding with colored clay overlapping techniques easy and quick. The designer had chosen a clay extruder as a tool for forming work pieces and designing patterns inspired by Hoop Taem Isan folk art to have a contemporary look with the Isan aura to preserve and extend the Hoop Taem Isan folk art, and created a mold for extruding clay according to the designed patterns. The study resulted in one set of food ware inspired by Isan folk art comprising six pieces: 1) two 17 cm plates, 2) two 24 cm plates, and 3) two 27 cm plates. Molds for compression molding porcelain decoration with color clay cutting technique were created as using a soil extruder helps making the process easy and quick. If the extrusion die is thin, the extruded clay can be rolled into a spiral. Therefore, the thickness of the mold has to be increased in order to get the components to meet the required design in terms of the size of the workpiece. The results show that this technique is suitable for producing small work pieces as forming a large work piece could create a high chance for the work to be damaged due to the fact that the molding of a large piece of work may result in the inconsistent of moisture content of the piece.
