A STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF STOOL FURNITURE FROM REED MAT FOR THE WOVEN MAT COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE, MUEANG DISTRICT, TAK PROVINCE

Abstract

This research aimed to study reed mat patterns, develop stool forms, and evaluate consumer satisfaction, by studying from a sample group of 40 people with a 5 point rating scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using statistics of percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The research results found that the weaving patterns of reed mats and the physical characteristics of reed stems that have geometric shapes can be applied as the main concept in product design very well. The researcher presented 3 forms of product design concepts connected with local identity and indigenous material structural systems, namely Form 1 Cylindrical shape (inspired by Chanthaboon reed stems), Form 2 Triangular shape (inspired by the geometry of reed stems), and Form 3 Square shape (inspired by Umbrella papyrus reed stems). In terms of production techniques, the researcher applied the "checkered pattern weaving technique," which has high flexibility and can precisely adjust the pattern size to fit with the stool structure of each form. This helps enhance the efficiency of forming, weight-bearing, and durability of the pieces. The satisfaction evaluation results found that consumers had satisfaction toward stool Form 1 (Cylindrical shape) at a "high" level (mean of 4.22) because the cylindrical shape is consistent with the properties of reed mats in continuously wrapping the structure, helping distribute pressure balancedly. Combined with the use of natural colors and functional usage that can actually store things, it makes the stool outstanding in aesthetics, strength, and functional utility. This research is considered as elevating the wisdom of reed mat weaving to contemporary furniture products that can respond to the needs of modern consumers and sustainably increase the competitive capability for community enterprises.
