Motivation and Behavior of International Tourists Involving the Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan, Surat Thani Province

Abstract

This research aimed to study: 1) the tourist's characteristic involving the full moon party, Koh Phangan, Surat Thani Province. 2) the motivation and behavior of international tourists involving the full moon party, Koh Phangan, Surat Thani Province, and 3) the relationship between the tourist's characteristic and tourist’s behavior towards the full moon party, Koh Phangan, Surat Thani Province. The data were collected from international tourists, who joined the full moon party during 2018. The statistical methods used to analyze data by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested by Chi-Square test, T-test, One-Way ANOVA and Scheffe at a significance level of 0.05.


     The study showed that most of the respondents were male, aged between 25-34 years old, single and unmarried with Bachelor's degree, and their average income under 20,000 USD per year working as a company employee. Most international tourists reside in Europe.


     Most of samples visited the full moon party for the first time and the main objectives were adventure and entertainment, traveled with friends and relatives. The duration of stay was 1 week and over. Most of the information was obtained by social media and planned before traveling between 2 weeks-1 month, mostly joined the party in December-February, rented car/motorbike for a trip and stayed at resort. The accommodation cost per day was 1,000-2,000 baht and the expenditure per person (excluding accommodation cost) was 10,000-20,000 baht. The most favorite activity was outdoor and adventure activities.


     Most of samples had motivation at a high level, which consisted of push and pull motivation factor at a high level. Most of international tourists were pushed by 1) seeking fun and adventure 2) relaxing and reducing stress and 3) visiting the place that I have not visited before. They were pulled by 1) having a unique party of its location, beautiful moon and nice atmosphere, 2) having a lot of friendly local people and other tourists.


     Results of hypotheses testing revealed that: 1) The personal factors were related to international tourist’s behavior involving the Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan, Surat Thani Province at the level of 0.05 2) The personal factors were related to international tourist’s motivation involving the Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan, Surat Thani Province at the level of 0.05.
