Study of Problems and Needs of Teachers’ Instruction in Mathematics (Grade 3) in schools under Phitsanulok Primary Educational Service Area Office 3

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to study problems and needs for teachers’ instruction development on learning management in Mathematics learning of grade 3 in schools under the Phitsanulok Primary Education Service Area Office 3, by dividing the problems of teachers into 5 areas as follows: 1) Knowledge in mathematics content, 2) Teaching preparation, 3) Organizing Teaching activities, 4) Media and teaching support, 5) Measurement and evaluation; the needs for teacher development were divided into 2 areas as follows: 1) Technical / teaching methods and 2) Mathematical process skills. The sample group consisted of 164 teachers under the Phitsanulok Primary Education Service Area Office 3 by purposive sampling method. The data were collected by using questionnaires on problems and needs for teachers’ instruction development in Mathematics Department learning of grade 3, with the validity of 0.6-1.0 and the reliability of 0.957 and analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean (), standard deviation (S.D.) and content analysis. The research found that teachers had problems in teaching  at a high level. When considered by each item ranging from the most to the least problems, they were as follows: teaching preparation, teaching activities,  content knowledge, media and instruction support. Measurement and evaluation was at moderate level and the need for teachers’ instruction development to strengthen in the calculation of the learners in both aspects was found that they needed to develop in teaching at a high level. When considered by each item, it was found that the mathematical process skills were needed more for teacher development than technical/teaching methods.
