Abstract

The objective of this research paper is to study the interaction between communities and ecosystem services in urban and peri-urban areas where the Mae Khao River flows through. The mixed methods research was conducted by querying 389 residents near the river and In-depth interviews community leaders. The results of the study showed that the samples in both areas utilized of Mae Khao River, both in provisioning and cultural services. Furthermore, it was found that the water utilization has changed from the past because of poor water quality, urban land use intensity and modern lifestyle.  For water quality management, peri-urban area should use urban planning regulations to contribute to the preservation of agricultural areas. For urban areas, laws should be regulated to reducing water pollution. Both areas can be linked to water tourism promotion activities, organizing cultures and traditions that contribute to the conservation of the river to resurrect the way of life in the community and the river.
