Conceptual metaphor of Kilesa in Sutantapitaka

This article aims to analyze conceptual metaphors of kilesa in Sutantapitaka. The analysis was based on Lakoff & Johnson’ s Cognitive Linguistics Theory. (1980) The data were collected from Sutantapitaka on the Tripitaka, Thai language royal edition. The results revealed that there were 10 types of conceptual metaphors of kilesa in Sutantapitaka such as 1) [KILESA IS MATTER] 2) [KILESA IS DIRTINESS] 3) [KILESA IS FIRE] 4) [KILESA IS ENEMY] 5) [KILESA IS SHACKLE] 6) [ KILESA IS OBSTRUCTION] 7) [KILESA IS HUMAN] 8) [KILESA IS SUPERIOR] 9) [KILESA IS FOOD] AND 10) [KILESA IS AREA]. The conceptual metaphors reflected Buddhistic concept that kilesa conduced to many problems in human life. Moreover, it can obstruct mental development so human should completely eliminate kilesa.
