The Design of Clothes from Handwoven Mudmee Fabrics by the Principles of Art Composition

Handwoven Mudmee fabrics are craftsmanship that have been created in aspects of production since ancient times. It has cultural and daily life values regarded as the craftsmanship that can be worn in everyday life, special occasions, and traditional festivals. Its patterns have been developed continually since the past until the present day based on humans' behavior and the way of life. Presently, handwoven Mudmee fabrics become more popular. It has been developed further in aspects of its concept, marketing, and creation techniques regarding colors, textiles, weaving techniques, and design process. According to this, handwoven Mudmee fabrics become a creative product that responds to consumers’ needs. The designing, developing, and creating processes correspond to the goals and principles of products and fashion design. The principles of art composition are used as the main element for the designing process. In the design process, inspiration, concepts, clothing styles, dressmaking techniques, repetition, rhythm, pattern, descending order, direction, harmony, contrast, balance, and unity are used to design products. The designed products become creative, outstanding, interesting, and unique in order to respond to the needs of consumers. The authors study and synthesize the qualitative studies that the interviews conducted to elicit the data from the representatives of the indigo weaving groups, handwoven Mudmee fabrics sellers, and experts in the field of fashion design. The results revealed a positive appreciation, support, and suggestion towards the designed product that was evaluated through the questionnaires. The statistical analysis of perceived value and the number of likes and shares on social media revealed that many designed products received 2,000 to 3,000 likes and shares, including 90 to 95 percent of positive comments and interactions. According to the results, this information is a practical guideline to develop the design process.
