Abstract

This academic article focuses on studying the production process of the traditional Northeastern Thai musical instrument, the Pong Lang, with a case study of Master Chettha Chairasmi, a knowledge inheritor from the National Artist, Master Plueang Chairasmi. The findings reveal that the Pong Lang produced by Master Chettha Chairasmi demonstrates superior sound quality compared to many other production sources in the Isan region, particularly in terms of resonance, pitch accuracy and durability. The primary material used in production is aged rosewood (Dalbergia cochinchinensis) and the tuning process relies on highly attentive auditory perception. Even without electronic devices, precise tuning can be achieved. The transmission of knowledge to younger generations emphasizes hands-on practice, with clear community participation, fostering a sense of connection and pride in traditional musical culture. This study suggests that the local wisdom in Pong Lang production by Master Chettha Chairasmi holds significant potential for preservation and can be adapted as a learning model in schools and communities to promote sustainable cultural conservation
