General Election in 2019: The Pheu Thai Party and Losing Seats in Khon Kaen

Candidates of the Pheu Thai Party have won almost all the seats in general elections in Khon Kaen since the parties were known as the Thai Rak Thai Party and the People's Power Party. However, in the 2019 election, although 8 Pheu Thai Party candidates won in Khon Kaen, 2 candidates lost in the first and second electoral districts (the Future Forward Party won in the first and the Palang Pracharat Party won in the second electoral district). It is the first time in 2 decades that the Pheu Thai Party have lost in these electoral districts and the first time also that the Pheu Thai Party could not win all the electoral districts in Khon Kaen since 2005. This research article has an objective: to analyze the cause of of the Pheu Thai Party losing in the first and second electoral districts. Documentary study, participatory observation and interviews with electoral candidates were used. The results found that the loss by the Pheu Thai Party in the first electoral district was because of: 1) the Pheu Thai Party’s political ideology was very similar to that of the Future Forward Party and their outstanding leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit; 2) the highly political awareness of Khon Kaen University students; and 3) the declining influence of the Pattanadamrongjit family; meanwhile, the loss in the second electoral district was because of: 1) the local administration and the opportunism after the 2014 coup of Wattana Changlao; 2) the popularity arising from Wattana’s position as the chairman of the Khon Kaen United football club; 3) Wattana’s characteristics and intentions; 4) problems in the Pheu Thai Party; and 5) the similarity between the Pheu Thai Party’s and the Future Forward Party’s ideology enabled Wattana Changlao to take advantage. However, the author also argues that the Khon Kaen people still supported the democratic parties and that the loss of the 2 Pheu Thai Party candidates does not imply the loss of the democratic faith of the majority of the Khon Kaen people.
