Abstract
Rice Production Cost and Marketing Channel in the Southern
The present study mainly examined rice production and marketing in Southern Thailand under a sharp increase in para rubber and oil palm price. The area of this study included Phattalung, Nakorn Srithammarat, and Songkhla provinces. The data was gathered through primary data collection using questionnaires and in-depth interviews of 348 farmers, 17 rice mills, and 30 rice middlemen. The findings revealed that the production cost of modern rice varieties had higher costs than local rice varieties; whereas, the modern rice yields were higher than local rice yields. Returns from growing modern rice were higher than those from growing local rice. In terms of production factor use, it was found that the use of rice seeds was approximately 25-30 kg./rai. As for marketing channels, the study result showed that rice mills relied mainly on paddy rice brokers to collect paddy rice. Moreover, the study found that the owners of the rice mills passed the brokerage fees onto farmers. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the government should establish a central rice market in order to improve rice market efficiently.
