Motivation of Monks and Novices in The Study of Phrapariyattidhamma, Pali Section in Phranakhon District, Bangkok

Abstract

          The objectives of this research were: 1. to study the state of teaching and learning the Pali language of monks and novices in Phranakhon district of Bangkok, and 2. to compare the opinion of monks and novices towards motivation in learning the Pali language in Phranakhon district of Bangkok. The research was mixed methods, quantitative research and qualitative research. The data were collected from 210 monks and novices learning Pali by using questionnaires. The in-depth interviews were conducted with 5 manager-monks of Phrapariyattidhamma Schools, Pali division. The data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, and One - Way ANOVA.

          The results of the study were found that: 1) The motivation of monks and novices in learning the Pali language was at a high level totally. The highest level was on educational security, followed by educational achievement, social requirement in education, educational recognition, and physical requirement in education respectively. 2) The comparative results of monks’ and novices’ motivation in learning Pali based on ages. years in monkhood, general educational levels, and Pali educational levels were not different and not relevant to the study hypothesis. 3) Guidelines in building motivation in learning Pali for monks and novices were as follows: (3.1) Physical requirement in education consists of the four requisites in life, good companions, good teacher, and good families. (3.2) Security requirement in education refers to physical, mental, budget and justice securities. (3.3) Social requirement in education means social reputation, honors, and recognition after graduation in Pali study.
