The Proposed Policy For Desired Characteristics Thai Polices

Abstract

This research had the objective to study the desirable characteristics for police officers in the Northeast Region of Thailand and to identify factors to motivate the police to perform their duties with excellence. Data were collected by focus group discussion during seminars and by questionnaire-based interviews with representatives of the Police Inspection and Monitoring Committee at the Khon Kaen Police Headquarters, representatives of academia at the College of Local Administration, representatives of the mass media, representatives of local politicians, and 200 police officers.  The discussions and questionnaires solicited opinions, viewpoints and recommendations from the respondents. The data were synthesized and analyzed to produce policy recommendations. This study found that the desirable characteristics of police officers who serve the Northeast Region include the following:  (1) Guardian of the public peace; (2) Practice professionalism in carrying out duties; and (3) Apply principles of good governance to their job.   Factors which can motivate the police to perform with excellence include (1) Adequate budget for the personnel to perform their tasks; (2) Fair salary and benefits; (3) Acceptance and respect from society; and (4) Participation and cooperation from the community to help the police succeed in their tasks.
