Technology and Relations of Class in Thailand: Grab Taxi

Abstract

The purposes of this study were (1) to examine how technology affects the social class (2) to examine the social class characteristics of Grab Taxi. The study was a qualitative research in term of case study. The author collects information from the document and participant observation and then relates and find the correlation of the data for conducing to hermeneutics. The results of the study revealed that technology influence transportation service and affected to Grab taxi's drivers who became a middle class or labor class sometimes. Refer to Eric Olin Wright's study about contradictory class location because Technology helps the driver has part-time worker. It is not necessary to become a full-time worker every day. Grab-taxi has adapted themselves form rapidly development of technology such as a job application, work procedures, length of work, the risks and being exploited. Resulting in these workers being classified as a new form of labor in Thai society.
