The Development of Teaching and Learning Skills in Abhidhamma in Bangkok

Abstract

          The objectives of this thesis were; 1) to study the state of teaching and learning Abhidhamma of Abhidhamma schools in Bangkok, 2) to develop teaching and learning skills in Abhidhamma of Abhidhamma schools in Bangkok, and 3) to propose a guideline of the development of teaching and learning skills in Abhidhamma of Abhidhamma schools in Bangkok. This research was mixed methods. The data were collected from 297 samples studying Abhidhamma by questionnaires and by in-depth interviews with 7 administrators of Abhidhamma Jotika Vidyalaya. The data were analyzed by percentage, mean and standard deviation.

          The results of the study were found that: 1) In the state of teaching and learning Abhidhamma of Abhidhamma schools in Bangkok, some schools lacked of teaching skills, and the teaching and learning process was through lecture and explanation. 2) The opinion of Abhidhamma students towards the development of teaching and learning skills in Abhidhamma of Abhidhamma schools in Bangkok was at a moderate level in total and in aspects. Teaching skills was at the highest level, followed by teaching techniques, teaching and learning activities, and instructional media respectively. 3) The guidelines in development of teaching and learning skills in Abhidhamma of Abhidhamma schools in Bangkok were as follows: teaching skills should be varied, teachers should be trained and practiced in teaching techniques, teaching media and technology should be provided and used in the classroom, and teaching and learning activities should be integrated with the knowledge body for the 21 centuries.
