Abstract

This study aims to explain the potential and preparedness of five municipalities in Nong Khai Province, as a key mechanism, to drive the grassroot economic development. The data were collected by semi-structured in-depth interviews with local administrators, local government officials, and civil servants from government agencies, totaling 10 persons. The researcher conducted data analysis by using thematic analysis approach.

The results show that the Nong Khai Municipalities are highly potential and interested in serving as key mechanism to drive local economic activities. Evidently, the factors such as economic ecosystem, investment, and tourism, public infrastructure, economic mindset of local leaders, strategic border (Thai-Laos) trade, and entrepreneurial skills are conducive to the success of local economic development. However, the local governments are still unprepared and not ready to undertake the responsibility, due to the lack of fiscal autonomy and rigid legal mechanisms to support grassroot economic development. Therefore, it is imperative that Thailand should have accelerate the economic growth by strengthening local administrative mechanisms.
