Abstract

This research is quantitative research, which aimed to study reading behavior and factors influencing the reading of undergraduate students at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. The data was collected from a sample group consisting of 375 Chiang Mai Rajabhat University students. By using questionnaires, 301 questionnaires were returned (80.27%). The statistical analysis used percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The research findings were as follows. Most of a reading objective was for academic researching (64.78%). The most reading time was from 4 PM to 8 PM (51.83%) and the reading duration was 16-30 minutes per session (45.85%). Mostly, the respondents did not read often (29.90%). They read at home (52.82%) and general knowledge (64.45%). A dictionary was the most printed material (60.13%), they read while electronic teaching materials such as PowerPoint was the most electronic media they read (59.80%). They read Facebook the most among social media (84.72%). They read printed materials borrowed from libraries (51.50%). They mostly read free reading or free downloading electronic media over the Internet (76.41%). Factors influence reading included reading motivation, which was at a high level ( =3.67, SD.=0.87). When considering each aspect, the highest mean were personal factors ( =3.87, SD.=0.83), followed by environmental factors of the university ( =3.80, SD.=0.85), and family factors ( =3.68, SD.=0.83), respectively. The factor with the least mean was peer factors ( =3.32, SD.=1.02). On the other hand, overall, factors that impede reading was at a moderate level ( =3.37, SD.=1.06). Peer factors was at the highest mean ( =3.70, SD.=1.02), followed by environmental factors of the university ( =3.68, SD.=0.91), and personal factors ( =3.58, SD.=1.01), respectively. The factor with the least mean was family factors ( =2.53, SD.=1.29).
