Lanna Memory in the Novel ‘Lanna Harem’

Abstract

The research entitled ‘Lanna Memory in the Novel Lanna Harem’ is a qualitative study that aims to investigate the representation of Lanna memory in the novel Lanna Harem. The study synthesizes postcolonial theory and memory studies to construct its theoretical framework. The findings reveal that the novel Lanna Harem constructs five dimensions of memory representation. First, the political representation illustrates the contestations among Siamese officials, Westerners, and local aristocrats. Second, the commercial representation highlights Chiang Mai’s advantages in trade, stemming from its strategic geographical location and its abundant forests. Third, the social representation depicts Chiang Mai during the period of Western colonial encroachment, which led to two divergent attitudes among the local populace: apprehension toward Western intrusion on the one hand, and acceptance of Western ways on the other. Fourth, the worldview representation portrays the clash between Western worldviews and local resistance. Finally, the scientific and technological representation demonstrates how Western knowledge and expertise emerged as mechanisms for generating income for Westerners.
